Best Train Rides

Hill Country Flyer – Austin
All aboard the original Hill Country Flyer, which travels 33 miles each way through the Texas Hill Country, from Cedar Park in Austin to Burnet. Along the way, you’ll pass by the timber bridge seen in the movie The Newton Boys. Upon arriving in Burnet, the train de-boards just two blocks from the downtown square, where there’s plenty of dining options and passengers can see a Wild West gunfight. The Hill Country Flyer operates vintage passenger cars pulled by a 1960 diesel Alco engine.

Grapevine Vintage Railroad – Grapevine
Hop aboard the Grapevine Vintage Railroad, which travels the historic Cotton Belt Route between the Grapevine train depot in Historic Downtown Grapevine and the Fort Worth Stockyards. The GVRR has two vintage locomotives, including a 1953 GP-7 diesel locomotive and “Puffy,” an 1896 steam locomotive, which is the oldest continuously operating steam engine in the south. Passengers enjoy a throwback experience in 1920s and 1930s Victorian-style coaches as they ride the historic route, complete with a snack bar that offers hot dogs, chips, candy, popcorn and drinks. Various thematic events are held on the GVRR throughout the year, such as the Polar Express and Train Robberies, so make sure to check their website before you plan your trip!
