World’s Largest Fire Hydrant*
Yes, the world’s largest fire hydrant* sits 24 feet tall in front of the Fire Museum of Texas in Beaumont. And it actually works! Why in the world does Beaumont have a giant fire hydrant, you ask? Here’s the back story: It was built at Disneyland as a promotional installation for Disney’s re-release of the animated version of 101 Dalmatians in 1999 (hence the spots), and Beaumont volunteered to be the permanent home of the hydrant. It reportedly weighs 4,500 lbs. and can spray 1,500 gallons of water per minute.
*This fire hydrant is no longer the world’s largest fire hydrant. Just two years after Beaumont acquired its 24-ft. fire hydrant, an artist in North Carolina built a four-story tall fire hydrant, and a city in Canada unveiled a 29-ft. tall fire hydrant. But the Beaumont hydrant is still the largest in Texas.
