Contour: UT’s Designer Showcase
April 18, 2012
-ut,

Explore the fresh talent out of one of the most interesting cities in America at the University of Texas at Austin’s Fashion Show “Contour” presented by University Fashion Group. The show kicks off this Thursday at 8pm at the Frank Erwin Center and will feature original designs from UT’s apparel design students, exploring the concept of contour using the latest techniques and different types of fabrics. A wide range of fashions from menswear and bridal gowns to active wear and digital printing will be judged by a panel of local industry professionals including designer Megan Summerville and TV host Carla McDonald.
If you can’t make it to the show—though you’d be sorely missing out—you can view a live webcast of the event here.
Be Mine
February 9, 2012
-ut,
Regardless of if you have a sweetheart, Valentine’s Day is yet another holiday Austin has capitalized on in every sense of the word. This weekend, UT’s campus is getting ready for the Studio 54 party which is typically the first party of the year to kickoff the rush process. If you’re a high school girl coming to UT in the fall, we suggest vintage hotspots like Best Store Feathers boutique and Lucy in Disguise for a mod and sparkly outfit to dance the night away.
If you don’t feel like boogying the night away and just want something fun to do with your girlfriends—or your beau—Whole Foods has an entire cooking class devoted to chocolate: Chocolate 101. If you’re like us and don’t have the patience to wait around for the finished product, there are a ton of places around Austin to pick up something sweet for your Valentine. Our personal faves include cake balls at Holy Cacao, chocolate covered strawberries—made only this time of year—at Amy’s Ice Cream or the delectable cupcakes at Hey Cupcake. After you’ve settled into your sugar coma, the Alamo Drafthouse’s Master Pancake Theater—a famous Austin tradition—is playing The Notebook all month long. We recommend jumping on the tickets fast for this one—they tend to sell out far in advance!
This Valentine’s Day we say treat yourself! What better time is there to indulge in a little (or a lot) of “me” time. Bust out the chocolate and get in touch with your feminine side with some touches of pink. Here are a couple of things we are sweet on this February:
- Madewell Heart Cotton Tote Bag
- Dara Ettinger Rose Gold Earrings
- Marc by Marc Jacobs Heart Shaped Stud Earrings
- Wildfox Couture Long-Sleeved Heart Shirt
- Top Shop High-Waisted Pink Skinny Jeans
- Toms Shoes Pink Ballet Flats (NEW this spring)
- Marc by Marc Jacobs Oh, Lola! Eau de Parfum Spray
- Lipstick Queen in Saint Red
- Fred Flare Heart Shaped Sunglasses
- Piara by Elaine J. Green Heart-Shaped Ring
- Chanel Le Vernis Nail Polish in May
- Russell Stover Chocolates
Date Night is Skate Night
-
am,

In College Station, Thursday night is generally reserved for two-stepping at the dance hall. But tonight, in honor of Valentine’s Day next week, try your two left feet at a different activity for a change: ice skating. Arctic Wolf Ice Center, on Holleman next to the Lofts Apartments, is hosting “Date Night” where $8 covers a night of skating for two. Anti-V Day? Drag your roommate along so you can both have a Michelle Kwan moment while saving a little bit of cash. Now if only we could master that triple lutz…
Happy Valentine’s Day to Me
February 8, 2012
-ut,

Calling all single ladies in ATX: Austin Best Store Eliza Page, a fabulous jewelry boutique, is hosting their I Want Candy party this Valentine’s Day and you’re invited! Don’t spend your night whipping out the tissues during your favorite Nicholas Sparks saga—treat yourself to glamorous baubles, fruity cocktails, and delicious treats. The fun starts at 5:30pm, and if you arrive early enough, you may even snag a swag bag filled with gifts from Eliza Page, Hiatus Spa+Retreat, Teddies for Bettys, Estilo and Milk+Honey.
This event not only features fabulous designs by Eliza Page and local line BonBon by Micah Yancey, but also provides an amazing opportunity to try out a dry-style by Austin’s new Blo Blow Dry Bar. While pampering yourself, nibble on sweets by Holy Cacao and sip on “Love Bite” cocktails from Tenneyson Absinthe Royale. To recap: you’ll get cocktails, tasty treats and swag bags, all while donning a red carpet-ready do. Don’t be late though, because the party’s over at 7pm and this is not an event you want to miss! RSVP here to save yourself a spot.
Not Your Grandmother’s Bingo
January 21, 2012
-am,

Don’t hate on the bingo until you’ve tried the bingo. Contrary to popular belief, Brazos Bingo is not just a room full of your grandmother’s friends trying to win big. Your grandma, your roommate and the guy you met at the bar last week are all here trying to win big. It’s a college-budget friendly night out—only five dollars a session—and you can BYOB. If you hit a hot streak and feel like sticking around for another session, Brazos City Grill is located inside Brazos Bingo and has a full menu stocked with Texas treats. Think Texas Toothpicks, Chicken Fried Steak and Fried Mushrooms.
Even if you’re not in it to win it—college kids always need more cash—it’s a great alternative to the bar if you’re low on extracurricular funds. Sessions are held at 6:30pm and 8pm Monday through Saturday.
Mambo in Bryan for NYE
December 26, 2011
-am,

We all know that learning the Texas two-step is a rite of passage in this state (and an unofficial requirement for entrance to Aggieland), but if you’re sticking around College Station for New Year’s Eve, we recommend giving the mambo a little spin. Mambo’s Salsa Dancing is hosting a party on New Year’s Eve at The Village in downtown Bryan off W. 26th Street from 10pm-2am for only $5. What’s that you say? No idea how to salsa? Join the club! The party starts off with an intro to salsa lesson, and they’ll be passing out party favors and noisemakers all night long—there’s even a champagne toast at midnight. So bust out those dancing shoes (as if we had to tell you) and RSVP here!
Roma Boots Event: Tomorrow
November 14, 2011
-tcu,

If you’ve been holding out for a pair of TOMS rain boots, we have a solution for you. Roma Boots, similar to TOMS, will match your shoe purchase to send a pair to a child in need. Inspired by his home country of Romania, Samuel Bistrian wanted a practical shoe alternative for children living in cold and wet climates. This Tuesday, Samuel himself will be on TCU’s campus in Sid Richardson Hall 4 at 7pm to give students and faculty more info about his great company. You’ll get to hear the passion behind the company, view videos of past boot drops Roma has completed around the world, and have a chance to ask Samuel questions about getting involved with Roma.
All who attend will receive a discount code for online orders, but if you can’t wait to get your hands on a pair of these comfortable boots—that come in a wide array of fabulous colors, we might add—you can pick up a pair at Sobo Fashion Lounge off of Camp Bowie.
Centennial Homecoming
November 4, 2011
-smu,

It’s that time of year again for SMU’s annual Homecoming! Students have been working hard on floats, banners and events for this weekend, November 3-6.
So break out your red and blue and get excited because this weekend SMU is celebrating its Centennial Homecoming with the following festivities:
The Pigskin Revue, SMU’s oldest tradition, will commemorate its 77th edition this Friday. The event features SMU students in dance, music and comedy acts accompanied by the Mustang Band playing new music and old favorites from past Revues. Festivities begin at 6:00pm with a reception on the Umphrey Lee upstairs patio followed by a 7:00pm dinner, and an 8:00pm talent show in Mack Ballroom.
The Homecoming Parade is at 11:00am on Saturday. You cannot miss this! Student organizations on campus have been “pomping” and painting for weeks working on these massive floats, and they never fail to impress! The parade will feature Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlins as the Parade Marshal and WFAA news anchor Shelly Slater as the emcee. The parade begins at the intersection of Hillcrest and University Avenues. Students, parents, faculty and alumni walk the route and dance to the Mustang Band all the way to the Boulevard. Need help with directions?
What football game would be complete without Boulevarding? Immediately following the parade, tailgating on Bishop Boulevard kicks into full swing at noon. Tents will be set up all over the Dallas Hall lawn and Bishop Boulevard will be bustling with food, drinks, music and more.
Afterwards, cheer on the Mustangs as they play Tulane at 2pm in Ford Stadium where the highly anticipated Homecoming King and Queen will be announced at halftime. Don’t forget your tickets to the big game!
Breakdown of Baylor Homecoming
November 1, 2011
-baylor,

Baylor has been perfecting the Homecoming tradition since its 1909 inception, making it one of the nation’s first official Homecoming celebrations. As one of the first, know that Baylor has its Homecoming events down. Never an underwhelming undertaking, the spirit and camaraderie behind Baylor’s Homecoming is truly impressive to witness. Even if you’re not a Bear, throw on your green and gold this weekend and head to any one of these events to experience college tradition at its finest.
Pigskin Revue
An annual Homecoming tradition showcasing winning acts from the previous spring’s All University Sing Competition. These Broadway-style productions are truly impressive, and always fun to watch. Performances start on Thursday and run all weekend. For tickets and a full schedule, click here.
Queen and Her Court
Every self-respecting Homecoming has an elected queen. At Baylor, queens used to be selected based on the quality of the float she rode during the parade. Now, the competition is a little more fierce, with the winner being determined by a panel of three carefully selected judges—the homecoming queen is the most prestigious of all of Baylor’s queens, after all. The Homecoming Queen will be revealed Thursday, November 3 at Waco Hall.
Freshman Mass
On January 22, 1927, ten Baylor students were killed in a tragic bus-train accident. More than 80 years later, Baylor students still honor the names of those who died with the Freshman Mass. Held on Thursday, November 3 at 11:00pm, the mass’s focus remains on the Immortal Ten and the unifying Baylor spirit they represent.
Extravaganza/Bonfire
Once upon a time, bonfires were strategically placed across campus to dissuade Aggies from stealing the school’s bear mascot, Chita. Eventually, the tradition was reduced to one main bonfire located at the heart of campus. Like many years before, the bonfire this year will be preceded by a pep rally, speeches and family activities starting at 6:00pm on Friday, November 4—admission is free.
Parade
You won’t see the horse-drawn carriages and wagons that used to lead the Baylor Homecoming parade, but the floats are still as impressive. Student and civic organizations participate in the annual event that stands as the nation’s oldest and largest collegiate homecoming parade. The parade starts at 8:30am on Saturday, November 5 and will track through downtown Waco and Baylor’s campus. For a detailed parade route, click here.
Football Game
Last, but not least, Homecoming weekend commences with the Baylor vs. Missouri football game at Casey Floyd Stadium scheduled for 6:00pm. After a full weekend of Baylor-infused events, the crowd will surely be rowdy! Don’t have tickets yet? No worries, if you’re a student entrance is free—everybody else can buy tickets here.
