Yuletide Yumminess
December 8, 2011
-smu

If you’re anything like us, the moment we discovered frozen yogurt had less fat than ice cream there was no turning back. Sure we still occasionally indulge in the dairy-based original, but unique flavors and toppings at fro-yo joints like I Heart Yogurt in University Park and Pinkberry on Greenville always keep us coming back.
For the more adventurous fro-yo lovers out there, Yogurtland over at NorthPark is in the middle of their Yuletide Yumminess promotion where they debut a new, one day flavor every day through December 12. Today’s flavor is Cinnamon Graham Cracker (yum!), but past flavors have included Dulce de Leche, Blood Orange Tart and Peanut Brittle. To stay up to date on the daily flavor, check out their Facebook for more info!

Sweater Season
December 3, 2011
-smu,

In chilly weather, it’s easy to throw on a hoodie and call it a day, but SMU students are far too fabulous for that. Next time you bundle up, swap that worn sweatshirt for a cozy-chic sweater—you’ll be so happy you did. Sweaters add versatility to any winter wardrobe—you can dress them up or down—all the while remaining stylish and functional. Casually pair your sweater with some cords or skinny jeans and flats for the perfect everyday look. Throw it on over a mini bandage skirt and high-heeled booties and you’re ready for a night on the town! Here are some sweaters SMU students are loving right now:
From left to right:
1. Ralph Lauren Black Label – Classic Fit Cable Cashmere
2. Anthropologie – Torus Sleeved Poncho
3. J. Crew – Donegal Wool Shawl Cardigan
4. Lilly Pulitzer – Rebecca Sweater
5. Anthropologie – Echoing Argyles Cardigan
6. Carven – Military Sweater
7. Sonia by Sonia Rykiel – Stripe Zip and Ruffle Sweater
8. Vince – Kimono Cardigan
9. J. Crew – Wynter Cowlneck Sweater
10. Anthropologie – Harrington Cowlneck

Santa’s Wonderland
December 2, 2011
-am,

It’s officially December, which means Christmas time is here. The lights are being hung and Christmas music is on repeat everywhere—‘tis the season! While the weather’s still bearable, it’s a great time for you and your friends to enjoy a true Texas Christmas experience at Santa’s Wonderland. The Wonderland is just off of Highway 6, only a few miles south of the A&M campus. You can’t miss the park—every inch is brightly lit with Christmas lights, which you can tour by car, carriage ride or hayride accompanied by live music. Be sure to stop by Santa’s Town to catch classic Christmas films on the giant outdoor movie screen and sip on “elf cider.” If you’re not in the Christmas spirit yet, one visit to Santa’s Wonderland will get you headed in the right direction in no time.
Breakdown of Baylor Homecoming
November 1, 2011
-baylor,

Baylor has been perfecting the Homecoming tradition since its 1909 inception, making it one of the nation’s first official Homecoming celebrations. As one of the first, know that Baylor has its Homecoming events down. Never an underwhelming undertaking, the spirit and camaraderie behind Baylor’s Homecoming is truly impressive to witness. Even if you’re not a Bear, throw on your green and gold this weekend and head to any one of these events to experience college tradition at its finest.
Pigskin Revue
An annual Homecoming tradition showcasing winning acts from the previous spring’s All University Sing Competition. These Broadway-style productions are truly impressive, and always fun to watch. Performances start on Thursday and run all weekend. For tickets and a full schedule, click here.
Queen and Her Court
Every self-respecting Homecoming has an elected queen. At Baylor, queens used to be selected based on the quality of the float she rode during the parade. Now, the competition is a little more fierce, with the winner being determined by a panel of three carefully selected judges—the homecoming queen is the most prestigious of all of Baylor’s queens, after all. The Homecoming Queen will be revealed Thursday, November 3 at Waco Hall.
Freshman Mass
On January 22, 1927, ten Baylor students were killed in a tragic bus-train accident. More than 80 years later, Baylor students still honor the names of those who died with the Freshman Mass. Held on Thursday, November 3 at 11:00pm, the mass’s focus remains on the Immortal Ten and the unifying Baylor spirit they represent.
Extravaganza/Bonfire
Once upon a time, bonfires were strategically placed across campus to dissuade Aggies from stealing the school’s bear mascot, Chita. Eventually, the tradition was reduced to one main bonfire located at the heart of campus. Like many years before, the bonfire this year will be preceded by a pep rally, speeches and family activities starting at 6:00pm on Friday, November 4—admission is free.
Parade
You won’t see the horse-drawn carriages and wagons that used to lead the Baylor Homecoming parade, but the floats are still as impressive. Student and civic organizations participate in the annual event that stands as the nation’s oldest and largest collegiate homecoming parade. The parade starts at 8:30am on Saturday, November 5 and will track through downtown Waco and Baylor’s campus. For a detailed parade route, click here.
Football Game
Last, but not least, Homecoming weekend commences with the Baylor vs. Missouri football game at Casey Floyd Stadium scheduled for 6:00pm. After a full weekend of Baylor-infused events, the crowd will surely be rowdy! Don’t have tickets yet? No worries, if you’re a student entrance is free—everybody else can buy tickets here.
Haunting Nights
October 28, 2011
-am,

Halloween is right around the corner, and for college students, the party options are undoubtedly piling up. For those who may want to escape the typical college scene for an evening, Downtown Bryan is guaranteed to give a good time with their Wacky Wicked Weekend. The historic La Salle Hotel is hosting a haunted house in their basement, while the streets of downtown will be filled with carriage rides, pumpkin carvings and other festivities. On Saturday night at 8:30pm, there will be a showing of “The Bride of Frankenstein” in the St. Andrews parking lot. Most of the activities are free, so grab your friends (and costumes) and take a trip to historic downtown Bryan!
Adventures at The Dallas Arboretum
October 27, 2011
-smu,

Want to spice up your weekend with something outdoors, fun and absolutely jaw-dropping?
One of the most beautiful outdoor attractions in Dallas is The Arboretum. Situated on White Rock Lake, 66 acres of gardens showcase seasonal flowers, trees, shrubs and various plant collections that are nothing short of incredible.
The Arboretum plays host to concerts, art shows, outdoor festivals, and weddings. It also offers year-round educational programs for children and adults through gardening and drawing/art classes.
Guests can enjoy a refreshing meal, snack or seated tea at one of The Arboretum’s four restaurants. The Restaurant DeGolyer has a grandiose setting located in the historic DeGolyer House. Tent at the Paseo is great for a quick lunch in the garden during festival weekends. At Lula Mae Slaughter Dining Terrace, you can have your meal at the restaurant with a fantastic view of downtown Dallas or “picnic style” in any of the gardens. Café on the green is another great option for seasonal dining.
Every year, to celebrate the fall season, The Arboretum creates a Pumpkin Village. This year there is a “Cinderella Fairy Tale” theme with four houses based on the classic fairytale. Fashioned from 1,200 pumpkins, Cinderella’s ballroom, the rooms of Cinderella and her ugly stepsisters, and the Fairy Godmother’s home all come to life!
Know before you go:
-The Arboretum is open daily from 9am until 5pm
-Don’t forget your camera—the photo ops are endless
-Each week something new opens in the garden, so check their website often for new events
-Weekdays tend to be less crowded than weekends
-Tickets are also available for purchase at Tom Thumb
-On Wednesdays you can get a “buy one get one” offer if you bring in a coupon from the website
-Food and drink are allowed in the garden, so pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic or two
Fright Night
October 26, 2011
-baylor,

As a kid, Halloween was the holy grail of all holidays (Christmas excluded, of course). You got to dress up like your favorite super hero or princess, prance around with your friends all night and come home with enough candy to feed a small army. Now, exit people giving you free candy for looking adorable; enter Zombies, haunted houses and Fright Night.
The ladies and gents from Phi Gamma Delta and Delta Delta Delta have joined forces again for Baylor’s largest student run event: a haunted house at Eastland Lakes Clubhouse whose proceeds will benefit the YoungLife of Waco. This year’s Fright Night starts on Thursday, October 27 and runs through Saturday, October 29. Baylor students, faculty and staff gain free entrance with their Baylor ID’s. A free shuttle service to the haunted house will run from Penland Tennis Courts from 7:45pm to 11:00pm each evening of the event. For more info, check out Fright Night’s Facebook.

ATX Fall Revelry
October 14, 2011
-ut,

When it comes to beautiful weather in Texas, it doesn’t get any better than October. Fall brings excitement of warm lattés, rustic colors and pumpkin spiced treats. We’ve all been bearing the heat on campus for the past few months and are craving an excuse to pull out our sweaters. In the spirit of cool breezes and fall break, we recommend taking a day trip with friends to do something fun and festive. Whether you enjoy scenic routes or lively fall festivals, check out these options for ways to kick off the season in Austin:
1. The Style Masters: For those of you who pride yourselves on fashion intuition, check out this fabulous exposé of Austin’s local emerging designers put on by Austin Tidbits. On October 27 from 6:00-8:00pm at Malverde on 2nd Street you can experience local designs, artwork and fashions like never before. The entry fee is only $5 and the first 50 guests get free swag bags. Find tickets here.
2. Sweet Berry Farms (Sept. 24-Nov. 12): What better way to bond with your roommates than to pick pumpkins, eat delicious homemade ice cream and enjoy the sweet small town hospitality at Sweet Berry Farms? We recommend road tripping with friends through the hill country to this cute farm on a weekend. It’ll be a great memory and it’s only an hour away!
3. Collins Tuohy—Delta Gamma’s Lectureship Series: While this event doesn’t necessarily take you off campus, we recommend you come out for the FREE lecture in the Texas Union Ballroom at 7:30 on Tuesday, October 18 to hear Collins Tuohy, sister of Michael Oher from “The Blindside,” share her amazing personal life story. Whether you’re a movie fanatic or simply interested in hearing the story of an influential young woman of our generation, don’t miss this inspiring lecture. Pick up your ticket today on the first floor of the Student Activities Center (SAC 1.112) to secure a spot to this awesome event.
4. Go to a fun concert: It’s a great way to let off some steam, and in Austin, the options are endless. Here are few we’ve spotted in the near feature:
- Ben Rector—Thursday, Oct. 20 at The Parish, 8:00pm
- Colbie Caillat—Friday, Oct. 21 at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q and Waller Creek Amphitheatre, 7:00pm
- Harvest Moon Concert With Josh Abbott and Jack Ingram—Friday, Oct. 28 at Fiesta Gardens, 8:00pm
5. The Austin Flea Market: Take a trip to Austin’s local flea market at Highball on S. Lamar to experience the quintessential Austin scene of amazing handmade and thrift goods from the city’s most talented vendors on Saturday, October 22 from 11am-5pm. The weather should be perfect for wandering through booths and browsing local treasures.
The options in Austin are limitless! Take advantage of the fabulous city around you and try out something new this fall. With a little exploring, you’ll be surprised at how many fun events are going on this fall. Enjoy!
