Common Grounds

Put down the Red Bull. If you’re having to consume your energy in liquid form as you round out finals week, the fare at Common Grounds is a great taurine-free option. Located right off of Baylor’s campus, you’ll be able to get your fill of caffeine from a unique assortment of specialty drinks, such as a Cowboy Coffee, along with desserts that are too good to pass up. The atmosphere makes it a favorite of many students, Waco residents and road trippers traveling up I-35. Not only are their drinks brewed to perfection, but the hole-in-the-wall coffee house also has a stage where various artists, ranging from Baylor uproar students to Phil Wickham, are known to perform.

-tech,

If you’ve ever been to a Texas Tech Football game, you know that it’s the Red Raider way or the highway. With a stadium atmosphere to rival the best—every game sounds like the Super Bowl—once fans are converted to the red and black, their loyalties never waiver. As a college student, it’s incredibly easy to make it to every home game (free with your student ID) and there is almost always a caravan of die-hard fans trekking it to the away games. As an alum, it’s a little more difficult to find the time and the finances to make it to every away game. Enter Major League Sports Travel.
Started by two die-hard Red Raider alums, Toni Cremeans and Zac Miller, Major League Sports Travel takes all of the stress out of planning an away game road trip, and finds a way to save you some cash in the process. These guys have been successfully putting together travel packages for alums and students alike all season long; all you have to do is find a way to get to Lubbock or the DFW area—all trips originate from one or both cities. For the Texas Tech vs. University of Texas football game this weekend, a tentative package includes roundtrip motor coach transportation, a one night stay in an Austin hotel and football tickets should the need arise. Packages are still available for the following football games:
- November 5: Texas Tech vs. University of Texas
- November 19: Texas Tech vs. University of Missouri
- November 26: Texas Tech vs. Baylor
Breakdown of Baylor Homecoming
November 1, 2011
-baylor,

Baylor has been perfecting the Homecoming tradition since its 1909 inception, making it one of the nation’s first official Homecoming celebrations. As one of the first, know that Baylor has its Homecoming events down. Never an underwhelming undertaking, the spirit and camaraderie behind Baylor’s Homecoming is truly impressive to witness. Even if you’re not a Bear, throw on your green and gold this weekend and head to any one of these events to experience college tradition at its finest.
Pigskin Revue
An annual Homecoming tradition showcasing winning acts from the previous spring’s All University Sing Competition. These Broadway-style productions are truly impressive, and always fun to watch. Performances start on Thursday and run all weekend. For tickets and a full schedule, click here.
Queen and Her Court
Every self-respecting Homecoming has an elected queen. At Baylor, queens used to be selected based on the quality of the float she rode during the parade. Now, the competition is a little more fierce, with the winner being determined by a panel of three carefully selected judges—the homecoming queen is the most prestigious of all of Baylor’s queens, after all. The Homecoming Queen will be revealed Thursday, November 3 at Waco Hall.
Freshman Mass
On January 22, 1927, ten Baylor students were killed in a tragic bus-train accident. More than 80 years later, Baylor students still honor the names of those who died with the Freshman Mass. Held on Thursday, November 3 at 11:00pm, the mass’s focus remains on the Immortal Ten and the unifying Baylor spirit they represent.
Extravaganza/Bonfire
Once upon a time, bonfires were strategically placed across campus to dissuade Aggies from stealing the school’s bear mascot, Chita. Eventually, the tradition was reduced to one main bonfire located at the heart of campus. Like many years before, the bonfire this year will be preceded by a pep rally, speeches and family activities starting at 6:00pm on Friday, November 4—admission is free.
Parade
You won’t see the horse-drawn carriages and wagons that used to lead the Baylor Homecoming parade, but the floats are still as impressive. Student and civic organizations participate in the annual event that stands as the nation’s oldest and largest collegiate homecoming parade. The parade starts at 8:30am on Saturday, November 5 and will track through downtown Waco and Baylor’s campus. For a detailed parade route, click here.
Football Game
Last, but not least, Homecoming weekend commences with the Baylor vs. Missouri football game at Casey Floyd Stadium scheduled for 6:00pm. After a full weekend of Baylor-infused events, the crowd will surely be rowdy! Don’t have tickets yet? No worries, if you’re a student entrance is free—everybody else can buy tickets here.
Aggies’ New Favorite Drink
October 6, 2011
-am,

One of the highlights of the Aggie football season is the game versus longtime rival University of Texas. Inspired by the spirit of great college rivalries, Gatorade has designed an A&M-specific 32-ounce bottle of maroon-colored fruit punch. The Aggie-inspired Gatorade bottle has hit Aggieland grocery and convenience store shelves and will be available until October 31, or while supplies last. Read: stock up as fast as you can, these things will fly off shelves.
An orange version will be available for UT as well, along with other teams involved in longstanding rivalries: University of Michigan/Michigan State, Florida/Tennessee and Southern Cal/UCLA.
The best part is that the bottles will give fans a chance to win tickets to the big game on November 24 plus $200 spending money and pre-game access to the field. We wonder whose fan base will snatch up all of their bottles first. Is that another rivalry we hear a-brewing?
