-ut,

After a long, sweltering summer, the weather is finally beginning to cool off—perfect for getting reacquainted with the outdoors. The crowded pathways of Town Lake and West Campus are proof that Austin is anxious to embrace the returning double digit temps. One of the great things about this city is the almost endless selection of parks for both relaxation and recreation. If you share our elation in being able to step outside at 3:00 in the afternoon without breaking a sweat, check out our suggestions for where to go and what to wear when you’re working on your fitness:
Town Lake is easily the most popular place for outdoor exercise in Austin. Located in the center of the city, it is almost always crowded with walkers, runners or kayakers. There are several trails so you can go as far as your legs can carry you. If you feel like relaxing, Town Lake is an excellent spot to admire both the city skyline and the Colorado River.
What to Wear: 1) Lululemon Tanks 2) Nike Running Shorts 3) Nike Running Shoes
The Green Belt is large park space with winding trails for jogging and biking. During non-drought conditions, there are creeks and swim holes to wander about during your trip. Although their number has dwindled from our lengthy summer scorcher, the Green Belt is still an excellent place to exercise and escape from city life.
What to Bring: 1) Bianchi Bicycle 2) Chacos 3) North Face Backpack
Although Black Swan Yoga is technically not a place for outdoor activity, the cost to participate is comparable. Located on 6th Street and Lamar near Whole Foods, Black Swan is a donation-based yoga studio, meaning you can pay whatever you are able. They offer a wide selection of classes, with skill levels ranging from beginner to advanced. This is a great place for yogis living on a college budget.
What to wear: 1) Yoga Mat 2) Adidas Sports Bra 3) Lululemon Yoga Shorts
The UT Recreation Facilities are an excellent resource for UT students. While many students tend to overlook Gregory Gym, it’s actually a fantastic facility for close-to-home exercise. We love that there are two pools to choose from: a lap pool and a recreation pool. It’s designed to look like a resort, perfectly melding exercise and sunbathing aspects in one location. The Whittaker Intramural Fields near the Triangle have free soccer fields and tennis courts—two sports perfect for this time of year.
What to Wear: 1) Speedo Swim Suit 2) Speedo Goggles 3) Nike Tennis Skirt 4) Nike Soccer Cleats 5) Missoni for Target Pool Towel
If you simply want to step out the door and walk, run or bike to your heart’s content, Austin is more than a pretty good place to make that happen. Nearly every street has a sidewalk, and UT’s location in the middle of the city gives you ample sightseeing opportunities. If distance is your goal, the Texas Capital is great place to start. Only a few blocks over from MLK, it’s an easy distance for a quick study break.
What to Wear: 1) Nike Running Shoes 2) Nixon Sport Watch
