Shopping on the Square
One of the most unique things about Texas is its unique town squares, and a few of them have stellar shopping!
Georgetown’s Historic Downtown Square has received recognition as a “Texas Treasure” by Texas First Lady Anita Perry. The square centers around the recently restored courthouse, and the historic district spills out into tree-lined streets featuring homes built as early as the 1890s. The best part of the square, though, is the charming shopping. The best time to shop Georgetown’s Historic Downtown Square is on the First Friday of each month, when the shops stay open late!
Gatherings
The well-edited “vignettes” in Gatherings make it particularly inviting and easy to shop. The selection is primarily furniture, pottery and linens, with a few outdoor pieces here and there. The owner really has a knack for finding interesting objects that we had never thought of, but suddenly can’t live without, and the prices are great.

Rough & Ready Antiques
Upon entering Rough & Ready Antiques, we noticed how spacious and well-organized it is—not the claustrophobic mish-mash you might experience in other places. Rough & Ready is a great source for old wooden wagons—perfect for accenting your yard or garden.

Monument Café
Located right off the square, this locally owned and operated restaurant is designed to look like the Texas roadside cafés of the 1920s–1940s. Droves of people show up every day for Monument Café’s free-range eggs, freshly squeezed juices, organic vegetables, Kobe beef, and homemade fries and onion rings. Everything on the menu is made with 100% real ingredients and cooked (read: not “heated up”) in-house. The made-from-scratch pies and frozen custard are so indulgent that once you try them you’ll be craving them nonstop. It’s the perfect post-shopping pick-me-up!

Granbury
The gem of Granbury’s town square is its Victorian courthouse. Granbury’s town square was actually the first in Texas to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places and it has also been recognized as the “Best Town Square in Texas” by Texas Highways magazine.
Almost Heaven
Our favorite shopping spots on the square include some home décor, some vintage and antiques, and an eco-friendly find. Almost Heaven has great home accessories with a one-of-a-kind, shabby-chic feel.

The restored historic town square in downtown McKinney is the perfect destination for an afternoon of strolling, eating and shopping. In total, there are more than 100 shops in the downtown area that span from home décor to apparel and antiques, plus the Heard Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary and the McKinney Performing Arts Center.

We also love Patina Green, a great store that perfectly balances home décor items and yummy local bites. The “home” side of the store is loaded with furnishings from Europe as well as repurposed pieces like cabinets made from found shutters, while the restaurant side has a small deli that features freshly-made dishes with local ingredients.
