FREDERICKSBURG and the Texas Hill Country
Fredericksburg’s central location in the Texas Hill Country viticultural area, the second largest in the United States, makes it a great base for exploring the 20 plus wineries of the region. The town’s beautifully restored 19th century architecture along Main Street houses an abundance of unique retailers, interior design studios, art galleries, wine tasting rooms and restaurants. Scenic country roads lead to fields of wildflowers, lavender farms, wineries, bed and breakfasts and outdoor recreation.

HELPFUL LINKS

Settled in 1846 by German immigrants, the town of Fredericksburg was named after Prince Frederick of Prussia. Today, Fredericksburg’s German influence remains strong. German food and Biergartens abound along Main Street, and the town’s roots are celebrated with traditional oompah music and dance at the annual Oktoberfest, always the first weekend in October.

If you’re ever stranded on the highway, check the back of your driver’s license for the Roadside Assistance Hotline (1.800.525.5555).

The Fredericksburg Food & Wine Fest (the fourth Saturday in October) celebrates Texas wines and Texas foods. And keep your toes tapping with live Texas music at Luckenbach, Rockbox Theater and other local entertainment venues.

The National Museum of the Pacific War and the LBJ State and National Historical Parks provide glimpses into the life and times of Gillespie County’s favorite sons --- Admiral Chester W. Nimitz and President Lyndon Baines Johnson.
